Last month, an automobile accident on Route 105 near the Middleboro and Lakeville town lines left two men dead and two other people critically injured. According to crash witnesses, 27-year-old Patrick Adams of Plympton was speeding against traffic in a black pick-up truck on Independence Day when he struck a utility pole near Route 28. Next, Adams allegedly continued heading in the opposite direction of traffic until he hit another pole near the Interstate 495 overpass. Despite the two initial crashes, Adams reportedly continued driving until he struck a Ford Focus that was carrying three people head-on.
The driver of the Focus, 47-year-old Christopher Backman of Middleboro, reportedly died at Tobey Hospital in Wareham as a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash. Emergency responders were required to cut Backman's critically injured passengers from the vehicle. Following the accident, 30-year-old Linda Millett was taken to Boston Medical Center by medical helicopters. Millett reportedly remains hospitalized in a coma. Her five-year-old son, Evan Tyler, was also transported by helicopter to Children's Hospital in Boston. Although Evan reportedly suffered lacerations to his face and neck, he was released from the hospital two days after the crash.
In both 2002 and 2010, Adams was cited by law enforcement officers for other collisions. He was also cited for speeding in 2002. The fatal Independence Day accident is currently under investigation by the Middleboro Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section. According to police, Adams was traveling at speeds of up to 87 miles per hour at the time of the accident despite posted speed limits of 30 miles per hour. Drug paraphernalia was allegedly found in Adam's pick-up following the deadly crash. Additionally, Adams faced heroin charges in Brockton District Court about one week prior to the fatal accident. Adams' toxicology results are reportedly still pending.
