In early December, a single-vehicle accident in Taunton killed two people and hurt four others. According to Taunton Police Officer Joseph Balmain, 24-year-old Nicholas Costa was driving a Honda Accord with five other people in the car when he struck a tree on Bay Street around midnight. 18-year-old Jason Neto and 18-year-old Eden Macedo, both of Taunton, reportedly died as a result of the injuries they sustained in the collision. Costa and three passengers, 18-year-old Ashley Rivera, 21-year-old Jose Rodriguez, and 18-year-old Chelsea Crancha, all of Taunton, were reportedly transported to Rhode Island Hospital for medical treatment.
The exact cause of the fatal crash is currently under investigation. According to Taunton police, speed was considered to be a factor in the accident. A law enforcement officer also stated that a mostly empty bottle of vodka was found inside of the Honda following the wreck. At the time of the fatal accident, Costa was allegedly driving without a valid operator's license. Officer Balmain stated Costa was facing vehicular homicide, open container, and driving on a suspended license charges in connection with the deadly wreck. He also said Costa could face additional charges pending the outcome of the accident investigation.
In 2011, 337 people died in a Massachusetts motor vehicle accident. Of those, 208 were killed in a single-vehicle crash. That means about 61 percent of all traffic fatalities throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts occurred as a result of a single-car crash. Although many factors can play a role in such an accident, speeding, driver inattention, swerving to avoid a collision, and impaired driving are common factors. In fact, speed reportedly played a role in about one-third of the motor vehicle accident fatalities that took place in Massachusetts in 2011.
